Bobby Hackett And His Orchestra, "That Old Gang Of Mine"

Bobby Hackett And His Orchestra, Aquela Minha Velha Gangue.
Experience jazz in your life at Archive.org

"That Old Gang Of Mine", com Bobby Hackett e The Tempo Twisters, é uma música de um disco de 1940 intitulado Horace Heidt Presents: Bobby Hackett And His Orchestra and The Tempo Twisters.

As crianças assistem a cena.

Absurdo absoluto.

Bobby Hackett  (Robert Leo Hackett,January 31, 1915 – June 7, 1976) was a great jazz musician, trumpet player, who also used to play the cornet and, sometimes, the guitar.
He played with the big bands of Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman, in the late 1930s and 1940s, and was the most important soloist of the melodical jazz discs of the Jackie Gleason Orchestra, in the 1950s.
It's a little difficult to know who were "The Tempo Twisters", but they probably are some members of the Tune Twisters (perhaps only two of them). Originally founded in 1934 as The Freshmen, the Tune Twisters were Andy Love, Robert "Bob" Wacker, and Jack Lathrop (famous guitar player).

Perhaps Bobby Hackett himself was the third vocal member of the trio. Hackett was a fine singer, but only casually he used to sing, as it seems to be the case.
Horace Heidt had his own orchestra and was a close friend of Bobby.

The scenes in this video show the hard times of the 1930s:
0:00 - Policemen firing guns as if they were chasing criminals.
0:11 - Burnt out car.
0:16 - Workers' strike is brutally repressed during the Great Depression: the police officers use machine guns and the workers are beaten by company security men.
0:38 - A man looks for food in the trash of garbage cans, but only finds newspapers.
0:43 - Chicago streets, early 1930s.
0:58 - Customs officials enforcing prohibition smashing barrels of alcohol.
1:08 - Gangsters captured by police.
1:13 - All Capone leaving court. Kids watch the scene.
1:21 - Machine gun (Thompson Submachine Gun, Caliber .45) and revolvers shots.
1:26 - The reconstitution of a kidnappin.
1:41 - The reconstitution of Bonnie and Clyde assassination (two days latter).
1:56 - Clyde and Bonnie's car riddled with bullets.
2:10 - The real scenes of Clyde and Bonnie's car, with Bonnie dead (Clyde was at her side, driving the car), May 23 1934.

"That Old Gang of Mine" is a 1923 popular song composed by Ray Henderson with lyrics by Billy Rose and Mort Dixon, and published by Irving Berlin, Inc.
From now, 2020, almost a century since, 80 years after Bobby Hackett's recording, and almost 90 years after these footages were made, unfortunately they are still not in public domain. The music and the images are protected by copyright rights for the benefit of someone who is not the author of the music, nor of the filming, nor even helped to create the record company, which incidentally does not exist any more. Absolute nonsense.

Something to remember about jukeboxes:
When Homer Capehart invented and sold his record changer mechanism to the Wurlitzer Company, in 1933, it was a great revolution in music listening habits. The mechanism was adapted by Wurlitzer to produce what would be known as  jukeboxes.
When jukeboxes entered the scene, big bands and swing jazz music were in the top hits. Jukeboxes became common in bars, ballrooms, ice cream parlors, barbershops, restaurants, and drugstores.
At first, the great record companies worried that jukeboxes would provoke a decline in record sales, but just the opposite happened.
The intention of this jukebox is to show some kind of music that many people simply don't know.
Once big bands, jazz orchestras and jazz vocalists were everywhere.
Here they ride again.
Thank you for listening.

Faixas do disco:
» COMES LOVE

» EMBRACEABLE YOU

» I’LL BE SEEING YOU

» GOOD MORNING HEARTACHE

» LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME

» THE VERY THOUGHT OF YOU

» YOU GO TO MY HEAD

» EASY LIVING

» EVERYTHING HAPPENS TO ME

» YOU’VE CHANGED

» THE SAME OLD STORY

» GOD BLESS THE CHILD

» SWING, BROTHER, SWING

Caravan, Duke Ellington Orchestra, 1937

Duke Ellington, byname of Edward Kennedy Ellington   (born April 29, 1899, Washington, D.C., U.S.—died May 24, 1974, New York, N.Y.) (Britannica)

The first version of the song was recorded in Hollywood in 1936, performed as an instrumental by Barney Bigard and his Jazzopators. Two takes were recorded, of which the first (Variety VA-515-1) was published. The band members were:

    Cootie Williams - trumpet
    Juan Tizol - trombone
    Barney Bigard - clarinet
    Harry Carney - baritone saxophone
    Duke Ellington - piano
    Billy Taylor - bass
    Sonny Greer - drums

"Famous Ellington standard featuring its composer Juan Tizol on valve trombone. The first recording of the song had been made five months earlier by a smaller Ellington group, but issued as by Barney Bigard and his Jazzopaters." Louis Jordan and His Tympani 5 - Waitin' for The Robert E Lee

#Jazz #BigBands

Haters back off:

Waiting for the Robert E. Lee is a popular song composed in 1912 by Lewis F. Muir and L. Wolfe Gilbert. The title refers to the steamboat of that name.
It was featured in the 1927 film The Jazz Singer, and later recorded by Al Jolson. (Wikipedia).

So, it's about a boat, not about general Lee and not on White supremacy, ok?

By the way, Louis Jordan and His Tympani 5 was a big band with African Americans only.

Saxofonist Louis Jordan and His Tympani 5 recorded Waitin' for The Robert E Lee on April 29th 1940.

And by the way again, general Lee surrender to general Grant on April 9, 1865, 150 years ago.
